How the scoring works (read this before trusting the ranking)
Every product spec below comes from the manufacturer's own published pages as of September 2026 — no retailer claims, no inferred numbers. Where a manufacturer doesn't publish a figure (Maytronics publishes no surface-compatibility lists, filter volumes, or saltwater ratings), the field is marked unverified and is never used to exclude a product.
- Hard gates (a product is ruled out, with the reason shown): over budget, corded when you require cordless, wrong pool type, pool bigger than the manufacturer's rating, and waterline rated "essential" when the product doesn't clean the waterline.
- Scrub tiers are derived, not guessed: strong = 2+ brushes and ≥4,500 GPH suction (manufacturer specs); standard = anything else with a brush. Concrete/pebble pools reward strong (+14); standard gets no bonus and a caution.
- Filter tiers are derived: large = published basket volume ≥3.5 L or dual baskets; mid = basket confirmed but no published volume. Heavy debris rewards large (+14); mid gets +4 with a "may need mid-cycle emptying" note.
- Saltwater: only the Betta SE carries a manufacturer saltwater rating (twin salt-chlorine-tolerant motors, +10). Every other product gets a visible caution — the manufacturer publishes no saltwater rating, so confirm before buying.
- Steps / sun shelf: only the AquaSense 2 Ultra is explicitly manufacturer-rated for steps and sunledges (+12). Others get a caution, not an exclusion.
- Value tilt: within budget, cheaper products get a small nudge (+8 max, shrinking with price). Affiliate commission plays no role in scoring — the ranking never sees it.
- Surface skimmers (Betta SE) are evaluated separately as a complement to a floor cleaner, never ranked against floor cleaners.
